Hawker heroes with a heart for their neighbours

Each day at five in the evening, a father-and-son hawker stall duo in Ang Mo Kio prepares about 50 boxes of economic rice to be handed out to the underprivileged elderly. Coming forward with the idea on their own accord, they wanted to help care for those around their neighbourhood.

No fire can destroy this kampung spirit

They lost most of their belongings to a fire that engulfed their Pasir Ris home, but Mr Mohd Rafi Basiran and his family experienced something priceless called the kampung spirit. Almost 30 of their neighbours came forward to help in the extensive clean-up of their flat, and one couple even created an online fundraiser and held a garage sale for the family.

Extended benefits to ease the load of unwed mums

Announced earlier in April, unmarried mothers will receive 16 weeks of maternity leave in effect from early 2017, while their children will be eligible for a Child Development Account later this year. These extended benefits, which at the moment apply only to married mothers and their children, look to ease the challenges unwed mothers face in caring for children on their own.

17-year-old RI footballer is the epitome of sportsmanship

In the Schools National A Division boys’ quarter-final football match between Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) and Raffles Institution (RI), one player displayed true sportsmanship that earned him praise, even from the opposing team. With his team trailing by a goal, RI striker Jonathan Chua was awarded a penalty by the referee. Instead of taking it, the 17-year-old owned up that he had fallen on his own and passed up an opportunity to level the game for his side.

Boy looks forward to seeing Star Wars uncle every day

On the way to school each morning, a young boy eagerly anticipates seeing Uncle Zainodin, whom he calls “Star Wars uncle”, stationed at the MRT platform – the two exchange a warm embrace while the child eagerly shows him his toys and books. The boy’s mother, netizen Samantha Bek, posted about the heartwarming story which garnered more than 7,000 shares on SMRT’s Facebook page, and she encouraged others to write in with their inspiring stories.
