Zika has arrived, and Singaporeans don’t seem too sure what to make of it. Not as serious as dengue but bad for pregnant women and babies, should we run for the proverbial hills and bring out our arsenal of mosquito patches, repellants and coils? Or maybe there’s no need for mass panic, as only one in five infected will suffer any symptoms of the virus.
Regardless, prevention is better than cure, and Malaysian and Indonesian officials are introducing thermal screening at the checkpoints to limit the chances of Zika crossing borders. Today, the might of men is being tested by some pesky mosquitoes, and nothing less than a concerted regional effort will give us victory.
The Pride’s ‘Why like that?’ series encourages you to live and laugh a little, even when the news headlines are depressing and people mock our ice cream sandwich.
