When you see someone in distress, is your instinct to look away, take a photo or step in to help?
Here in Singapore, ‘mind your own business’ is commonly heard, a slogan for self-preservation and not volunteering ourselves into difficult situations. Sometimes, it comes from not wanting to intrude on what we see as someone else’s private business because we want to help them ‘save face’.
But when such an attitude means nobody steps in as a deaf and mute cleaner is unfairly berated by a customer, or when people stand around as a group of young bullies beat up their victim, we say it’s time to stop being a bystander.
When the time comes, will you stand by or stand up to be counted?
